About

Dr. Pratyay Mukherjee has held the position of Senior Director of Research at Supra Research since June, 2022. My research encompasses all aspects of Cryptography and Computer Security. Recently he has been mostly focusing on applications of Cryptography in the Payment and Blockchain space and specifically in Threshold Cryptography.

Prior to this he was a Senior Research Scientist at Swirlds Labs (Jan 2022 to June 2022), and Senior Research Scientist at Visa Research (March 2017 to Jan 2022).

In October, 2015, Dr. Pratyay received his PhD in Computer Science from Aarhus University, Denmark, where he was on a PhD Fellowship (August, 2012 – August, 2015). He spent the final year of his PhD at Northeastern University, Boston. Following this, he did his post-doc at UC Berkeley during Summer 2015 to Spring 2017. Earlier he obtained my Master's in Computer Science from Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (2011), where he was awarded the Silver Medal for topping the class. Even before that he had received his Bachelor's in Electronics and Telecom. Engineering from Jadavpur University, Kolkata (2008).

Interests and expertise

My main research area is Cryptography. In the past I worked on Tamper-resilient Cryptography, Multi-party Computation, Program Obfuscations, End-to-end Encryption, etc. Mostly trained with theoretical modeling, design and analysis of cryptographic tasks, I now work more on applying theoretical principles into Cryptographic techniques related to Blockchain, such as Threshold Cryptography.

Commentary

At Supra I work on developing the design for Distributed Verifiable Random Function (DVRF) technology. The existing deployments borrow state-of-art techniques to achieve strong security, high throughput and full decentralization. Additionally, we developed a new technique to guarantee output-privacy in a DVRF design — this enables reducing cost of the service significantly. Moreover, we are also working on a new simple Non-interactive Distributed Key Generation design from newly proposed number theoretic tools such as class-groups.

mentorship

At Supra Research I am mentoring Sriram Sridhar from UC Berkeley (Summer 2023). Previously, I co-mentored Yinuo Zhang from UC Berkeley at Swirlds Labs and a host of interns while at VISA Research.
